About this calculator

Use this calculator when you are cutting vodka for a punch, making a liqueur, or bringing a high-proof bottle down to sipping strength.

Alcohol is conserved: spirit volume × its ABV = final volume × target ABV. Water to add is the extra volume. The mix is treated as volumes you measure in a jug; it ignores the small contraction when ethanol and water mix, which is acceptable in a kitchen and is not how a distillery gauges.

Spirit volume: How much spirit you have. Enter millilitres or fluid ounces; the result uses the same volume system.

Spirit ABV (%): The bottle’s alcohol by volume, as a percent. Type 40 for 40% / 80 proof.

Target ABV (%): The strength you want after adding water. It must be lower than the spirit and greater than zero. Type 20 for a long drink.

Water to add: Volume of water to mix in.

Final volume: Total volume after dilution.
