Use this calculator for the heat absorbed or released when a sample changes temperature without melting or boiling. Q is positive when the sample warms and negative when it cools.
The formula is Q = m c ΔT. c is specific heat. Liquid water is about 4184 J/(kg·K), so 1 kg warmed by 10 K takes about 42 kJ. Melting or boiling needs latent heat in addition to this. A kelvin difference is the same size as a Celsius difference.
Mass (kg): Mass of the sample, in kilograms.
c (J/(kg·K)): Specific heat capacity. Water ≈ 4184.
ΔT (K): Temperature change. Same number as a change in °C.
Heat (J): Energy transferred as heat, in joules.
