About this calculator

Use this calculator for a combustion-analysis write-up: you weighed the sample, the CO₂ trap, and the water trap, and need %C and %H.

Mass of C = mass CO₂ × 12.011 / 44.009. Mass of H = mass H₂O × 2.016 / 18.015. Percents are those masses over the sample mass. Sample, CO₂, and H₂O masses can be entered in grams (g), ounces (oz), or pounds (lb); the calculator converts to grams. Oxygen and other elements are not inferred here.

Sample mass: Sample mass you burned, in g, oz, or lb.

CO₂ mass: CO₂ collected from the absorption tube, in the same mass units.

H₂O mass: H₂O collected from the drying tube, in the same mass units.

Mass C / Mass H: Element masses from the traps.

% C / % H: Mass percents relative to the sample.
