Use this calculator to find the volume, total surface area, and lateral area of a right circular cylinder from radius and height. It applies to cans, tanks, pipes, and any other solid with circular bases and a height along the axis.
The formulas are: volume = π r² h, lateral area = 2 π r h, and total surface = 2 π r (r + h). The lateral area is the curved wall (the label around a can). The total surface adds the two circular disks. Height is measured along the axis, perpendicular to the bases.
Use the same length unit for radius and height. Volume is in that unit cubed; areas are in that unit squared. A hollow pipe is this volume minus the inner cylinder, which this calculator does not subtract.
Radius: Radius of the circular base.
Height: Distance along the axis between the two bases.
Volume: The space enclosed by the cylinder.
Total surface: The two bases plus the curved wall.
Lateral: Area of the curved wall only, 2 π r h.
