About this calculator

Use this calculator to estimate depth of field for a still or video shot. Enter focal length, f-number, focus distance, and circle of confusion. Focal length and CoC can be millimetres (mm) or inches (in); focus distance can be metres (m) or feet (ft). The unit selectors convert to millimetres and metres before the formula runs, and the three distance results follow the focus-distance unit.

Hyperfocal H = f² / (N × c) + f, with f and c in metres. Near = (H × s) / (H + (s − f)). Far = (H × s) / (H − (s − f)) when that denominator is positive; otherwise far is treated as infinity and shown as a very large number. 50 mm at f/2.8 focused at 3 m with a 0.03 mm CoC has a hyperfocal around 29.8 m.

Full-frame CoC is often 0.03 mm; crop sensors typically use a smaller value. This is a thin-lens geometric model: it ignores diffraction, focus breathing, and subject movement.

Focal length: Lens focal length. Enter mm or in.

f-number: Aperture as f/N, for example 2.8.

Focus distance: Subject distance. Enter m or ft.

Circle of confusion: Acceptable blur diameter. Enter mm or in.

Hyperfocal: Distance at which everything from about half H to infinity is acceptably sharp.

Near / Far: Near and far limits of the depth of field at the given focus distance.
