About this calculator

Use this calculator when making a working solution from a bottle, or a serial series for a plate: same relation, two modes.

Single step: V1 = C2·V2 / C1 and diluent = V2 − V1. Serial: each step uses the same factor f = (C1/C2)^(1/n); transfer V1 = V2 / f into a new final volume V2. Use the same concentration unit throughout. Final volume can be entered in millilitres (mL) or fluid ounces (fl oz); the calculator converts to millilitres and reports stock and diluent in the same volume unit. Target concentration cannot exceed stock.

Mode: One mix (C1V1) or n equal serial steps down to the target.

Stock concentration: Stock concentration, any unit as long as it matches the target, for example 1 M or 10 mg/mL.

Target concentration: Concentration you want, same unit as stock. Must be lower than stock.

Final volume per step: Final volume of each mix, in mL or fl oz.

Serial steps: How many serial transfers. Use 1 for a single step; 3 for a three-tube series.

Stock / transfer volume: Volume of stock (or of the previous step) to transfer.

Diluent volume: Volume of diluent to add.

Dilution factor: C1/C2 for a single step, or the per-step factor in serial mode.
