Use this calculator for electroplating or water-splitting lab work when you ran a current for a known time and want grams from Faraday’s law.
Charge Q = I × t. Moles of product = Q / (n F), with F = 96485.33212 C/mol. Mass = moles × M. Current is in amperes and time in seconds; n = 2 for Cu²⁺, 1 for Ag⁺. Product mass is in grams internally and can be displayed in grams (g), ounces (oz), or pounds (lb).
This is Faraday’s law for 100% current efficiency. It does not subtract side reactions or overpotential losses.
Current (A): Current in amperes. A 0.5 A bench supply is 0.5.
Time (s): Time the current ran, in seconds. Ten minutes is 600.
M (g/mol): Molar mass of the product, g/mol, 63.5 for copper metal.
n (e− per formula): Electrons transferred per formula unit. 2 for Cu²⁺ + 2e⁻ → Cu.
Charge (C): Total charge passed, in coulombs.
Moles: Moles of product deposited or evolved.
Mass: Product mass from moles × M, in g, oz, or lb.
