Hydrostatic Pressure Calculator

Find the gauge pressure P = ρ g h under a still liquid column.

Gauge P (Pa)

About this calculator

Use this calculator for the extra pressure at depth h in a static fluid: P = ρ g h. ρ is density, h is depth below the free surface. Fresh water is about 1000 kg/m³, so 10 m of water is about 98 kPa, close to one atmosphere. This is gauge pressure only: it does not add the air above the lake.

Density, depth and g must be greater than zero. For unit swaps alone, use the pressure converter. The liquid is assumed still and of uniform density.

Density (kg/m³): Liquid density. Fresh water ≈ 1000.

Depth (m): Depth below the surface, in metres.

g (m/s²): Usually 9.81 m/s².

Gauge P (Pa): ρ g h in pascals.
