Kinetic Energy Calculator

Find Newtonian kinetic energy K = ½ m v² in joules.

Kinetic energy (J)

About this calculator

Use this calculator for the classical kinetic energy of a rigid mass. A 1000 kg car at 20 m/s (72 km/h) has 200 kJ. Double the speed and K quadruples because speed is squared. The sign of v does not matter.

Mass must be greater than zero. This is the Newtonian formula, not the relativistic (γ − 1) m c² expression, so keep speeds well below c.

Mass (kg): Mass in kilograms.

Speed (m/s): Speed; sign does not matter because it is squared.

Kinetic energy (J): ½ m v².
