Lighting Calculator

Estimate the lumens you need from a target lux level and the floor area to light.

Lumens

About this calculator

Use this when you are sizing lamps for a room, a desk, or a workshop. Lumens = lux × area. 300 lux on 12 m² is 3600 lumens at the working plane if nothing is lost to walls, dirt, or a narrow beam. Real rooms need more: a typical utilization factor is 0.4–0.7, so buy extra lumens. A desk often wants 300–500 lux; a kitchen 300; a living room 100–200.

Area can be entered in square metres (m²) or square feet (ft²).

Lux: Target illuminance on the surface, in lux (lumens per square metre).

Area: Floor or desk area to light.

Lumens: Total luminous flux to aim at that plane, ignoring losses.
