About this calculator

Use this calculator for the scalar Lorentz force when velocity is perpendicular to B and the electric and magnetic terms add along one line: F = q E + q v B. The magnetic part is really q v × B; here the magnitude of that cross product is used. An electron has q ≈ −1.6×10⁻¹⁹ C (the sign flips the force). Set B = 0 for a pure electric field.

A proton (q ≈ 1.602×10⁻¹⁹ C) in E = 1000 N/C, v = 10⁶ m/s and B = 0.01 T gives about 1.76×10⁻¹⁵ N. This is not a full 3D vector solver and does not include radiation reaction.

Charge (C): Signed charge. Proton ≈ +1.6e-19, electron negative.

E (N/C): Electric field along the line.

Speed (m/s): Speed. The magnetic term assumes v perpendicular to B.

B (T): Magnetic field. Zero if you only have E.

Force (N): q (E + v B).
