Use this calculator when making a stock from a lyophilized vial: you know milligrams in the bottle and the concentration the protocol wants.
The calculation is volume (mL) = mass (mg) / concentration (mg/mL). 10 mg at 2 mg/mL is 5 mL. The result is millilitres; fluid ounces are offered if the display unit follows an imperial volume elsewhere, otherwise mL.
Mass stays in milligrams and concentration in mg/mL; those units are not converted. This does not account for displacement volume of the solid.
Mass (mg): Powder mass in milligrams, often the label on the vial.
Target (mg/mL): Target concentration in mg/mL, for example 10.
Volume: Solvent to add, in millilitres.
