Estimate dry-air sound speed with v ≈ 331 + 0.6 T, T in °C, result in m/s.
| Speed (m/s) | – |
Use this calculator for a classroom approximation of the speed of sound in dry air: v ≈ 331 + 0.6 T, with T in Celsius and v in m/s.
At 0 °C sound is about 331 m/s; each degree adds roughly 0.6 m/s, so 20 °C is about 343 m/s. Humidity and altitude change it a little. Solids and water are much faster (water ~1480 m/s). This is not a full ideal-gas √(γRT/M) solver.
Temperature (°C): Air temperature in Celsius.
Speed (m/s): Approximate speed of sound in dry air.
