About this calculator

Use this calculator to measure how spread out a numeric list is. Choose sample when the list is a subset used to estimate a larger group (the usual spreadsheet STDEV, divisor n − 1). Choose population when the list is the entire group (divisor n).

Variance is the mean of squared deviations from the mean, using n − 1 or n as above. Standard deviation is the square root of that variance. The coefficient of variation is SD / |mean|, a unit-free relative spread. The classic list 2, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 7, 9 has sample SD = 2.

You need at least two numbers and a non-zero mean for CV. Multiply CV by 100 if you want a percent (relative standard deviation). This is not a standard error of a mean.

Values: Numbers separated by commas, spaces, or semicolons.

Kind: Sample (n − 1) or population (n).

SD: Standard deviation.

Variance: Square of the standard deviation.

CV: Coefficient of variation, SD divided by the absolute mean.
