Board feet
Volume (m³)

About this calculator

Use this calculator to turn a stack of rectangular boards into lumber volume. Enter thickness, width, length, and how many pieces.

The calculation is: volume (m³) = (thickness ÷ 1000) × (width ÷ 1000) × length × count. Board feet = volume ÷ 0.002359737 (one board foot is 144 in³). Thickness and width can be entered in millimetres (mm) or inches (in); length in metres (m) or feet (ft). The unit selector converts them to millimetres and metres before the formula. Volume is reported in cubic metres; board feet are a lumber tally, not a second SI unit.

This is nominal sawn volume. It does not deduct planing, kerf, wane, or moisture shrink, and it is not a dressed-size takeoff.

Thickness: Board thickness, in mm or in. A common 25 mm board is about 1 in nominal.

Width: Board width, in mm or in.

Length: Piece length, in m or ft.

Count: Number of identical pieces.

Board feet: Lumber volume in board feet.

Volume (m³): Same volume in cubic metres.
