About this calculator

Use this calculator for a planning figure of diet carbon from how often you eat beef, chicken, and plant-based mains, not a full grocery life-cycle assessment.

Each serving is taken as 0.15 kg edible. Yearly CO₂e is servings × 0.15 × the factor × 52 weeks. The factors are order-of-magnitude lifecycle figures: beef 27, chicken 6.9, and plant mains 1.4 kg CO₂e per kg edible. Beef share is 100 × beef CO₂e ÷ the three-item total.

This only covers those three plate types. Dairy, fish, cooking fuel, and waste are ignored. Factors vary widely by country and farming system.

Beef servings / week: How many beef mains you eat in a typical week.

Chicken servings / week: How many chicken mains you eat in a typical week.

Plant servings / week: How many plant-based mains (beans, tofu, grains as the protein) you eat in a typical week.

kg CO₂e / year: Estimated carbon from these three items over a year.

Beef share (%): How much of that total comes from beef.
