About this calculator

Use this calculator when a species has a published mercury number and you want a meal count for an adult. It is not medical advice, and it is not for pregnancy or children.

Micrograms per meal = ppm (µg per gram of fillet) × serving grams. The weekly allowance is 0.1 µg per kg of body weight per day × body kg × 7 (EPA methylmercury RfD). Meals per week is that allowance divided by µg per meal. Body weight can be entered in kilograms (kg) or pounds (lb). Serving mass can be entered in grams (g), ounces (oz), or pounds (lb); both convert before the formula. Sensitive groups use stricter guidance.

Mercury (ppm): Mercury in the fillet, in ppm (same as µg per gram). Tuna is often 0.2–0.5; swordfish can be higher.

Body weight: Body mass, in kg or lb. An adult is often around 60–80 kg.

Serving: How much fish in one meal, in g, oz, or lb. A typical steak is about 170 g.

µg / meal: Mercury in that serving.

Meals / week at the limit: How many such meals hit the adult RfD.
