About this calculator

Use this grill size calculator before you invite people over: you know the cooking surface and the size of your patties, and you do not want a second shift.

Grate area is width × depth. Each patty is a circle (πr²). The fit count leaves about 30% slack for tongs and flare-ups, then rounds down. A kettle’s usable grate is less than the lid’s full circle. Lengths can be centimetres or inches; area follows that choice (cm² or in²).

Grate width: Left-to-right cooking grate. 60 cm is a medium gas grill.

Grate depth: Front-to-back of the grate. 40 cm is a typical shallow box.

Patty diameter: Patty diameter. 10 cm is a standard burger; smash burgers are wider and thinner.

Area: Cooking-grate area.

Patties (fit): How many round patties fit with the 30% spacing allowance.
