About this calculator

Use this for woodworking and metalwork when a decimal readout needs to match a ruler. Type decimal inches and pick how fine to round.

The leftover after the whole inches is rounded to the nearest 1/n, then reduced (2 6/16 becomes 2 3/8). Pick a coarser denominator if you want a simpler mark, knowing it may round more. Decimal output is the original value unless rounding lands on a whole inch.

Inches: The decimal inches from a caliper or CAD, e.g. 2.375.

Denominator: How fine to round: 8, 16, 32, or 64, matching the marks on your tape.

Fraction: The rounded mixed number, e.g. 2 3/8 in.

Decimal: The inches used for the fraction (original, or the next whole inch if it rounded up).
