About this calculator

Use this calculator to decompose a national or regional carbon total the way the Kaya identity does, so you can see which lever is doing the work.

The calculation is: CO₂ = population × GDP per capita × energy per GDP × CO₂ per energy. Keep the units consistent with each other: if population is in millions, GDP is in the same money unit you used to build energy per GDP, and so on. The product is just a number in whatever CO₂ unit your last factor uses (often Mt or Gt).

This is an identity, not a forecast. It does not model policy, prices, or technology change.

Population: Number of people. 60 can mean 60 million if the other factors are built that way.

GDP per capita: Average income per person, in the same money unit as energy per GDP.

Energy / GDP: Energy used per unit of GDP (energy intensity).

CO₂ / energy: Carbon intensity of that energy.

CO₂: Product of the four factors.
