Use this kitchen swap calculator when the recipe wants three cloves and you only have a jar of powder, or when the baker listed fresh yeast and you bought instant.
One clove is about ⅓ teaspoon of garlic powder. Dried herbs are about one-third the volume of fresh. Fresh yeast × 0.5 is active dry; × 0.4 is instant. These are kitchen folklore, not lab assays. Yeast mass can be entered in grams, ounces, or pounds.
Garlic cloves: Whole garlic cloves the recipe calls for. Two medium cloves is a typical pasta sauce.
Fresh herb (tsp): Teaspoons of chopped fresh herb (parsley, thyme, basil). Three teaspoons is a tablespoon of chopped leaves.
Fresh yeast: Mass of fresh cake yeast. A small 20 g cube is a common European pack.
Garlic powder (tsp): Approximate teaspoons of garlic powder.
Dry herb (tsp): Approximate teaspoons of dried herb.
Active dry yeast and instant yeast: Mass of those packets that stand in for the fresh yeast.
