About this calculator

Use this calculator for a steel or other metal pipe. Enter outside diameter, wall thickness, length, and density in kg/m³ (steel is often 7850).

Inside diameter = OD − 2 × wall. Cross-section = π (OD² − ID²) / 4, with sizes in metres. Mass per metre = area × density. Total mass = mass per metre × length. OD and wall can be entered in millimetres (mm) or inches (in). Length can be entered in metres (m) or feet (ft). Total mass is shown in kilograms (kg) or pounds (lb). Mass per metre stays in kg/m.

The wall must be thinner than half the OD. This is a solid annulus, not a lined or coated pipe.

Outside diameter: OD, in mm or in.

Wall: Wall thickness, in mm or in.

Length: Pipe length, in m or ft.

Density (kg/m³): Metal density. Steel ~7850; aluminium ~2700.

Mass per metre (kg/m): Linear mass.

Mass: Total mass of the run.
