About this calculator

Use this calculator for a national or global plastic-mass sketch when you have a production figure and headline recycle and leak rates.

The calculation is: recycled = production × recycle %. Leaked = production × leak %. Residual = production − recycled − leaked. Recycle % + leak % must be at most 100. Both percentages apply to the same production total, not to the leftover after the other.

This is mass accounting, not a full material-flow analysis. Incineration, export, and stock in use sit inside residual unless you fold them into the two rates.

Production (Mt): Yearly plastic production in megatonnes. 400 is a recent global-scale figure.

Recycle (%): Share of that production counted as recycled, 0–100.

Leak (%): Share counted as leaked to the environment, 0–100.

Recycled Mt: Production × recycle %.

Leaked Mt: Production × leak %.

Residual Mt: What is left after both shares.
