Priming Sugar Calculator

Calculate how many grams of corn sugar to add so bottled beer carbonates to the fizz you want.

Dextrose

About this calculator

Use this priming sugar calculator at bottling day when the beer is in the bucket and you need a priming dose for a given carbonation.

Dextrose mass ≈ beer litres × volumes of CO₂ × 3.7. That 3.7 is a kitchen factor for beer around 20 °C; leftover CO₂ already in the beer and how fermentable the sugar is are ignored. Table sugar needs a slightly higher mass for the same carbonation. Beer volume can be litres or gallons.

Beer: Volume of beer you are bottling. 19 L is a typical 5-gallon homebrew batch.

Volumes CO₂: Volumes of CO₂ you want. 2.4 is a common pale-ale fizz; lagers often sit higher, British bitters lower.

Dextrose: Mass of corn sugar (dextrose) to dissolve for priming.
