About this calculator

Use this tea brew calculator when you are brewing loose tea and the tin only says “2.5 g per 100 ml”, or you want a teaspoon estimate.

Leaf mass = water millilitres × (grams per 100 ml) ÷ 100. Western-style tea is often 2–3 g per 100 ml. Teaspoons assume about 2.5 g of loose leaf each; a fluffy white tea will look like more. Temperature and steep time stay on the tin. Water can be millilitres or fluid ounces.

Water: How much water is going in the pot. 300 ml is a large mug; 500 ml is a small teapot.

Leaf g / 100 ml: Grams of leaf per 100 ml of water. 2.5 is a common Western brew; Gongfu is much higher.

Leaf: Leaf mass to weigh.

Approx. tsp: Rough teaspoon count at 2.5 g per spoon.
