Urban Tree Benefits Calculator

Estimate yearly CO₂ uptake from a count of urban trees and a per-tree planning figure.

kg CO₂ / year

About this calculator

Use this calculator for a street-tree or park sketch when you want a planning mass of CO₂, not a full i-Tree study.

The calculation is: kg / year = trees × kg CO₂ per tree per year. The default 21 kg/tree/year is an urban-tree planning figure. You can enter that per-tree mass in kilograms (kg) or pounds (lb). Species, age, climate, and watering change uptake a lot.

This ignores methane, cooling of buildings, and stormwater. Young saplings sequester far less than a mature canopy.

Trees: How many trees you are totalling.

kg CO₂ / tree / year: Yearly uptake per tree, in kg or lb. 21 kg is a common urban planning figure.

kg CO₂ / year: Total yearly uptake of the stand.
