Basal Area

Calculate tree and stand basal area from DBH and trees per hectare or per acre.

Tree basal area
Stand basal area

About this calculator

Use this to estimate the basal area of one tree and of a stand. Basal area is the trunk cross-section at breast height. For one tree it is the area of a circle from DBH. Stand basal area is that area times how many trees share the plot, assuming they all have the same DBH.

DBH: Trunk diameter at about 1.3 m above ground. Pick centimetres or inches.

Trees per area: Stand density in trees per hectare or trees per acre. The stand result follows that choice (m²/ha or ft²/acre).

Tree basal area: Cross-section of one trunk. Shown in m² or ft² to match the DBH unit.

Stand basal area: Tree basal area times density, per hectare or per acre.
