Use this calculator to estimate how many cattle the available forage can feed for a given number of days. Enter the total amount of forage available, the forage consumed by one animal per day, and the number of days the supply needs to last.
The calculation is: cattle head = available forage ÷ (daily intake per head × number of days). The forage amount and daily intake must use the same mass unit, such as kilograms (kg) or pounds (lb). The unit selector is handled automatically by the calculator, so you can use either kg or lb for both mass inputs.
This is a theoretical feed-capacity estimate. It does not account for forage losses from trampling, spoilage, selective grazing, waste, storage losses, or changes in animal intake. For pasture planning, the actual usable forage supply may therefore be lower than the entered amount.
Forage available: Total amount of forage available to feed the cattle. Enter the amount in kilograms (kg) or pounds (lb).
Intake per head per day: Amount of forage consumed by one animal each day. Use the same mass unit as the available forage, in kg or lb.
Days: Number of days the available forage needs to last.
Head: Estimated number of cattle that can be fed for the specified period. A result such as 12.5 means the available forage is theoretically enough to provide the specified ration for 12.5 animal-equivalents over the selected period; it does not mean that half an animal can literally be kept.
