Use this calculator as a field curiosity: count cricket chirps over a short interval and convert the rate into an approximate air temperature. The estimate follows Dolbear's law for the snowy tree cricket. Species, humidity, wind, and which insect you actually heard all throw it off; it is not a weather station.
Chirps are scaled to a per-minute rate n = (chirps ÷ seconds) × 60. Fahrenheit is then 50 + (n − 40) / 4, which is the same as n/4 + 40. Celsius is the standard conversion (F − 32) × 5/9.
Chirps counted: How many chirps you counted in the listening window.
Seconds: How many seconds you listened while counting. 15 seconds is a common window.
°C: Estimated air temperature in degrees Celsius.
°F: Estimated air temperature in degrees Fahrenheit.
