DNA to mRNA Calculator

Transcribe a DNA sequence into mRNA from the coding (sense) strand or the template (antisense) strand.

mRNA (5′→3′)
Length (nt)

About this calculator

Use this calculator as a homework or cloning check: paste DNA and say whether it is the coding/sense strand or the template/antisense strand. This is letter conversion, not gene annotation. There are no introns, promoters, or a codon table.

If the input is the coding strand, the mRNA is the same 5′→3′ sequence with T written as U. If the input is the template strand, the mRNA is the reverse complement with U in place of T, so the result is still written 5′→3′. Only A, C, G, T, and U are kept; spaces and digits are ignored. If your source sequence is 3′→5′, reverse it before pasting.

DNA sequence: Paste DNA 5′ to 3′. Spaces and numbers drop out; letters other than A, C, G, T, U are dropped too.

Strand: Coding if the sequence matches the RNA (T instead of U). Template if it is the strand RNA polymerase reads.

mRNA (5′→3′): The transcribed RNA sequence.

Length (nt): Number of nucleotides in that mRNA.
