Use this calculator to convert an as-fed feed weight into dry matter. Wet feeds such as silage, fresh grass, or moist hay look heavier than they are nutritionally, so comparing rations on a dry-matter basis is the fair way to match hay, silage, and concentrates.
The calculation is: dry-matter mass = as-fed mass × (100 − moisture) ÷ 100. Dry-matter percent is 100 minus the moisture percent. You can enter the as-fed mass in kilograms (kg) or pounds (lb); the result uses the same mass unit.
This is a composition conversion from the moisture figure you enter. It does not measure moisture itself, and it does not adjust for ash, spoilage, or shrink.
As-fed mass: The wet weight of the feed as you weigh it out, in kg or lb.
Moisture (%): Water content as a percent of as-fed mass. Typical hay might be around 15%; fresh grass or silage is often much higher.
Dry matter: The mass of feed remaining after moisture is removed, in the same unit as the as-fed mass.
DM (%): Dry-matter percentage of the as-fed sample, equal to 100 minus moisture.
