Use this calculator for a first estimate of how much grain sits in a round, flat-bottom bin or silo. Roof space, packing, moisture, and cone-shaped heaps are ignored: the grain is treated as a cylinder of the entered diameter and grain height.
Volume is π × r² × h, with r equal to half the inside diameter. Mass is volume times bulk density. Diameter and grain height can be entered in metres (m) or feet (ft); both are converted to metres before the calculation. Volume is reported in cubic metres (m³). Bulk density stays in kilograms per cubic metre (kg/m³). Grain mass is shown in kilograms (kg) or pounds (lb).
The default density of 720 kg/m³ is a typical wheat-scale figure. Change it for corn, barley, or a more tightly packed pile. This is a geometric estimate, not a weighbridge ticket.
Diameter: Inside diameter of the bin, in m or ft.
Grain height: Depth of the grain, in m or ft, not necessarily the eave height of the bin.
Bulk density (kg/m³): Bulk density in kg/m³. Wheat is often around 720; corn is often a little lighter; packed grain is heavier.
Volume (m³): Cylindrical grain volume in cubic metres.
Mass: Estimated grain mass from volume × density.
