Harmonic Mean Calculator

Calculate the harmonic mean of a list of non-zero numbers.

Harmonic mean

About this calculator

Use this calculator for rates and ratios in which the denominator is what you average, such as speeds over equal distances, or parallel resistances in the same units. The harmonic mean of 30 and 60 is 40: two equal stretches at 30 and 60 average 40, not 45.

The calculation is: hmean = n / (1/x₁ + … + 1/xₙ). Zeros are rejected (a reciprocal would be infinite). Negative values are allowed mathematically but rarely belong in a rate list. Separate numbers with commas, semicolons, or spaces.

Values: Non-zero numbers, for example 30, 60.

Harmonic mean: n divided by the sum of reciprocals.
