About this calculator

Use this calculator to get a first walking-time estimate from horizontal distance and total ascent. Enter distance in kilometres (km) or miles (mi) and climb in metres (m) or feet (ft); the unit selectors convert both values automatically before the calculation.

Hours = distance in kilometres ÷ 5 + ascent in metres ÷ 600. 12 km with 600 m up is 2.4 h plus 1 h, about 3.4 hours (204 minutes). Descent, pack weight, fitness, rest stops, and terrain are ignored. Other rules such as Tranter slow the estimate on steep ground.

This is planning only, not a rescue ETA. Bad weather, navigation, and night walking can add a lot of time.

Distance: Horizontal route distance. Enter km or mi.

Climb: Total ascent. Enter m or ft. Downhill is ignored by this rule.

Time (h): Estimated hours.

Time (min): The same estimate in minutes.
