Volume

About this calculator

Use this calculator to estimate the volume of bark, compost, raised-bed fill, or a rectangular patch of soil. Enter the length and width of the bed and the depth of the layer. For cylindrical pots, use a potting-soil calculator instead; this tool is length × width × depth.

The calculation is: volume (m³) = length × width × (depth ÷ 100). Length and width are converted to metres and depth to centimetres before the formula runs. You can enter length and width in metres (m) or feet (ft), and depth in centimetres (cm) or inches (in). The result is reported in cubic metres.

This is a geometric fill volume. It does not account for compaction, settling, waste, irregular shapes, or slope.

Length: The long side of the bed or patch, in metres or feet.

Width: The short side, in metres or feet.

Depth: How thick the layer should be, in centimetres or inches. Garden mulch is often 5–8 cm.

Volume: Estimated fill volume in cubic metres (m³).
