About this calculator

Use this calculator to obtain the observed frequency of mutants in a plate or culture from two counts. Enter how many mutants you scored and the total number of colonies or cells scored. This is an observed frequency in a sample, not a per-generation mutation rate, which needs the history of the population.

The calculation is: frequency = mutants ÷ total. Percent is that frequency × 100. Total must be at least 1. Mutants cannot exceed the total count.

Mutant count: How many mutant colonies or cells you counted.

Total count: How many colonies or cells you scored in total, mutants included.

Frequency: Mutants as a fraction of the total (0 to 1).

Percent: The same frequency expressed as a percentage.
