Use this calculator as a talking tool with a veterinarian, not as a euthanasia rule. HHHHHMM is Hurt, Hunger, Hydration, Hygiene, Happiness, Mobility, and More good days than bad. Score each item from 0 (worst) to 10 (best).
The total is the sum of the seven scores out of 70. A common reading of that total: above about 50 acceptable, 35–49 review with a veterinarian, below 35 poor. The original scale treats 35 or more as an acceptable quality of life; this three-band reading adds a middle 'review' range.
Hurt (0–10): Pain and breathing comfort. 10 is comfortable; 0 is uncontrolled pain.
Hunger (0–10): Appetite and ability to eat. 10 is eating well.
Hydration (0–10): Drinking and whether gums look hydrated. 10 is well hydrated.
Hygiene (0–10): Coat, waste, and whether you can keep them clean. 10 is manageable.
Happiness (0–10): Interest in family, toys, the window. 10 is still themselves.
Mobility (0–10): Getting up, walking, not slipping. 10 is moving as usual.
More good days (0–10): Whether good days still outnumber bad. 10 is mostly good days.
Total: Sum of the seven scores (0–70).
Band: Acceptable, review with a veterinarian, or poor.
