About this calculator

Use this calculator only as a coarse risk sketch. It is not a diagnosis. Any raisin or grape ingestion, and any worry after chocolate or onion, warrants a veterinarian or a poison line. Amounts, products, and the animal's health change the picture.

Chocolate uses published theobromine levels (white 0.1, milk 1.5, dark 5, baker 14 mg per gram). Dose is milligrams of theobromine per kilogram of body weight. Dog bands sit around 20 mg/kg mild and 60 mg/kg severe. Onion dose is grams per kilogram; bands sit around 5–15 g/kg. Raisin dose is grams per kilogram; harm can start around 0.7–2.8 g/kg. You can enter weight in kilograms (kg) or pounds (lb), and amount eaten in grams (g), ounces (oz), or pounds (lb). Chocolate type is ignored unless the toxin is chocolate. Chocolate risk bands here follow common dog figures; still call a vet for a cat.

Species: Dog or cat.

Toxin: What was eaten. Chocolate type only matters on the chocolate path.

Weight: Body weight, in kg or lb.

Amount eaten: How much was eaten, in g, oz, or lb.

Chocolate type: White, milk, dark, or baker's/cocoa.

Dose: Estimated dose in the unit shown.

Unit: mg/kg theobromine, g/kg onion, or g/kg raisin.

Risk band: Low, moderate, or high.
