Bales

About this calculator

Use this calculator to estimate a pine-straw order from the area you will mulch and how much ground one bale covers at the depth you want. Coverage printed on the bale wrapper changes with how thick you spread the straw, so use the figure that matches your intended layer.

The calculation is: bales = area ÷ coverage per bale. Area and coverage must use the same area unit. The unit selector is handled automatically, so you can enter both values in square metres (m²) or square feet (ft²).

This is a coverage estimate only. It does not account for overlapping edges, settling after rain, leftover unused bales, or a second top-up later in the season.

Area: The beds, paths, or beds-plus-paths you will cover. Enter the area in m² or ft².

Coverage per bale: How much ground one bale covers at your chosen depth, in the same area unit. The wrapper often lists this; a thicker layer covers less area per bale.

Bales: Estimated number of bales to order. Round up if you want a spare bale for edges and thin spots.
