Plants per hectare

About this calculator

Use this calculator to estimate field density for maize, vegetables, or trees when you know the distance between rows and the distance between plants along the row.

The calculation is: plants per hectare = 10 000 ÷ (row spacing × in-row spacing), with both spacings in metres. Feet are converted automatically before the calculation. One hectare is 10 000 m², so the product of the two spacings is the ground area occupied by one plant.

This is a geometric planting density. It does not account for skips, doubles, germination losses, headlands, or later thinning.

Row spacing: Distance between adjacent rows. Enter the value in metres (m) or feet (ft). For example, 0.75 m is a common 75 cm maize row.

In-row spacing: Distance between plants along the row, in the same length unit.

Plants per area: Estimated population in plants per hectare. If you need plants per acre, divide by 2.471, or convert the result after noting that the formula itself is per hectare.
