Small-Animal Cage Calculator

Estimate a minimum floor area for rabbits or rats that share one enclosure.

Minimum floor

About this calculator

Use this calculator for a starting floor-area figure when several rabbits or rats will live together. It is a floor-area floor, not a full welfare specification: height, hiding places, enrichment, solid versus wire floors, and outdoor runs still matter. The numbers are a common practical rule, not a legal standard in every country.

Rabbit: 0.6 m² for the first animal plus 0.2 m² for each extra animal. Rat: 0.5 m² for the first animal plus 0.2 m² for each extra animal. The result is returned in square metres and can be shown in square feet.

Species: Rabbit or rat. The first-animal area differs; the extra-animal increment is the same.

Animals: How many animals will share the cage. Must be at least 1.

Minimum floor: Estimated minimum floor area for that group.
