Use this calculator for √x, the principal square root of a non-negative real number. It answers “what number, squared, gives x?” and always returns the non-negative root. 9 gives 3, not −3.
The calculation is result = √value. The value must be ≥ 0; negative inputs are rejected because this page stays in the reals. For a cube root or other degree, use the nth-root calculator. For x^(1/2) with IEEE edge cases, the power page is equivalent for x ≥ 0.
