Use this calculator to obtain a plant-load figure: how many kilograms of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) pass through a sewer or treatment works each day. Enter the daily flow and the BOD concentration from the lab.
The calculation is: load (kg/day) = flow (m³/day) × BOD (mg/L) ÷ 1000. One cubic metre is 1000 litres, so milligrams per litre times cubic metres per day, divided by 1000, gives kilograms per day. Flow must be in cubic metres per day and BOD in milligrams per litre; these concentration and volumetric-flow units are not converted by the unit selector.
BOD is how much oxygen microbes would use to oxidise the biodegradable organic matter in the water. This is a mass-balance sketch for design or daily reporting, not a treatment-efficiency model. It does not distinguish BOD5 from other BOD tests unless that is what you enter.
Flow (m³/day): Daily flow through the plant or sewer, in cubic metres per day.
BOD (mg/L): BOD concentration in milligrams per litre.
BOD load (kg/day): Daily mass of BOD in kilograms per day.
